TYPICAL EMOTIONAL CHANGES

The third trimester can be challenging, both physically and emotionally. You may feel physically uncomfortable because of your baby’s size and position. In the third trimesters of my own pregnancies, I felt like an overripe peach dangling from a tree: so full and just waiting to burst. You may be ready to move beyond pregnancy and onto the next stage of your life. Staying in the present moment and remaining optimistic are essential for being able to enjoy the end of your pregnancy.

Try not to compare your body to those of other pregnant women, as all women carry their babies differently. Pregnant bellies can be high, low, big, small, wide or compact. It all depends on your body’s structure, your weight gain, and your baby’s size and position.

At the end of pregnancy, women often feel spacey and find it hard to focus on work and details. Use this as an opportunity to let go of some responsibilities (if possible), to daydream, and to enjoy doing simple things. Envision carrying your baby in your arms. Sit under a tree and ponder baby names, or partake in other creative, dreamy activities.

Many women experience mixed emotions in the third trimester: excitement, anxiety, bliss, and feeling overwhelmed are a few. You may wonder how you will manage family, work, personal time, adjusting to motherhood, and the changes in your relationships, especially if you already have one or more children. Talking to other mothers can shed light on the joys and challenges of expanding your family and help you feel more prepared for motherhood.

You may also be curious about what the birth will be like, if you will be able to handle the pain, and if you will have the right support. Remember that you have all the strength inside yourself to birth your baby, and babies come into the world a multitude of ways. The ultimate goal is a healthy mom and healthy baby. There are no right or wrong ways to give birth.

Fear, both your own and your partner’s, may be more pronounced in the third trimester. The thought of a baby coming can make some partners feel that they are not ready for parenthood and can bring up issues like not wanting to repeat the mistakes of their parents. Men often handle third trimester emotions differently than women. I remember feeling that my husband was not as excited as I was in the last few months. This was completely untrue, and I came to see that his way of expressing his excitement and anticipation was different than mine. He wasn’t doting over adorable, tiny newborn clothing like I was, but enjoyed assembling the birthing tub, car seat, and changing table. He needed to use his hands to tangibly create something for our baby. That process helped him emotionally to become ready for our new life as parents.
